Extending Dataverse with a Geographic Map for Dataset Search Results

Activity: Talk or presentationAcademic

Description

Displaying datasets on a geographic map, as an alternative to the traditional paged search results list, enhances dataset discoverability. This presentation will demonstrate how we implemented this feature in our Dataverse archive for archaeological datasets. I will also explain how we accomplished this integration without modifying the Dataverse code, making the approach useful for others who wish to extend the user interface without committing to either the PrimeFaces or the newer React-based Dataverse frontend.

Although the current implementation is functional and beneficial, we will also explore suggestions for improvements and potential future enhancements. This session will be valuable for anyone interested in leveraging geographic information within Dataverse metadata, as well as those exploring ways to customize Dataverse without changing its user interface code.
