The large-scale loot of material objects during the ‘colonial project’ was part of overarching systems of not only cultural domination but also economic, social and ecological exploitation. Whereas present debates on colonial restitution focus primarily on objects in ethnographic museums, we could thus also ask in what ways colonial loot and ecological violence interconnect and what role the environment and climate could play in alternative approaches to restitution. During this excursion around Amsterdam East, we want to explore these questions with you by moving from ‘What is restitution?’ towards ‘What could restitution be?’
