The town laws of Dordrecht, 1160(?)-1252

Activity: Talk or presentationAcademic

Description

The townsmen of Dordrecht received certain urban rights from Count William I of Holland 800 years ago. The charter in which these are recorded has been severely affected by the ravages of time. Fortunately, the text can be largely reconstructed with the help of town law from 1252. This has never happened before. As a result, three layers are visible in the law of 1220. The youngest layer is from 1220 itself. The two older layers form two previously lost rights to the people of Dordt, one around 1160 (?) and one shortly after 1204.
