Wageningen SIAS debate - World without pesticides: paradise or hunger?
A world without pesticides sounds beautiful. Suddenly, no worries about toxic compounds in the environment. Stories about natural enemies being killed by insecticides would slowly disappear. No one would be able find any link between neonicotinoid products and bee- and bird decline. Instead, maybe, cropland becomes intermixed with beautiful flowers strips giving habitat to natural enemies preventing any pest. How realistic is such a dream? Is feasible to feed the world with realistic alternatives? Are agrochemicals really such harmful to the environment? prof. Ingolf Steffan-Dewenter from the University of Würzburg and Jos Tielen from Bayer CropScience gave their opinion.
