Abstract

This article argues that, in the city of Buenos Aires of the years immediately
preceding the Sáenz Peña law, both politics in general and electoral practices in particular were a very present phenomenon in the life of thousands of workers. Drawing upon a wide variety of sources - commercial, political and trade union newspapers; satirical and general interest magazines; university theses, academic and journalistic books; popular literature, novels and popular plays-, the article reviews some of the characteristic traits of the electoral system of the time, emphasizes the important presence of workers in the electoral mobilizations, particularly addressing the role played by public employees and by different intermediaries (the "caudillos") and examines the representations of politics and elections that circulated among the working class of the period. It aims to understand the reasons that led workers to participate, or not, in these practices, as well as the interpretations that were made of them.
