Abstract

The workshop aims to address, through the case study of Giacomo Leopardi's Infinito, the central issue of critical apparatus encoding. We aim to promote sharing of ideas and experiences to establish a shared model for the XML/TEI encoding of similar textual situations. "Codificare al(l'Infinito)" thus represents both a moment of theoretical reflection on textual problems related to the encoding of texts with a mixed tradition (manuscripts and printed editions), as well as a practical test for the resolution of the crucial issues involved in this practice. In fact we will propose an XML/TEI markup model of the poem, with particular attention to the problems encountered in modeling the data and to the description of the various alternative solutions found so far. This introduction will be followed by a workshop on XML/TEI markup of the Leopardi's Idilli, that constitute a system with the Infinito within the "Neapolitan notebook". Finally, we will propose an exercise with Edition Visualization Technology to visualize the data encoded during the workshop.
