Abstract

We still lack a proper historiographical approach on the political history of the Socialist Party congresses, apart from a set of works edited by the party itself in the early twentieth century. To the extent that these books are edited by the PS itself, they conceal more than they reveal about the tensions and internal debates that were common in party life. It is necessary, therefore, to overcome these shortcomings and develop a social and political history of the party that would equal what has been done for other social democratic parties of the period. The aim of this article is to provide some methodological considerations and a series of first approximations based on an analysis of the early years of party congresses, which could contribute to the essential historiographic revision that is required in this area. Other lines for further research will also be suggested
