Abstract

The report addresses the issue how research fields develop nationally and what impact do policies and other factors have? The report is based on two surveys. For one we interviewed ~80% of all faculty deans of Dutch universities about their funding and research strategy. For the other we surveyed all active members of the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Young Academy. The report gives a list of research fields that are doing well or are in decline. Furthermore it provides an overview of main strategic developments within the universities. Against expectations, differences between fields and faculties within science, medicine, engineering, social sciences, humanities are often as large as differences between these domains.
