Abstract

Short biography of Max Driessen. As chief engineer (1929-1948) of the Central Experiment Station (Centraal Proefstation) of the Dutch Statemines (Staatsmijnen) he led research and development for the coal cleaning process. This resulted in a breakthrough when cyclones, known as a device for purifying gases, appeared to function very well as hydrocyclones, for separating particles from liquids in the loess washery. Nowadays, hydrocyclones are standard equipment in the process industry.
