Abstract
Fallen in the Whirlwind explores the fate of Iranian political activists and migrant workers who became victims of Stalin’s Great Terror in the 1930s. Drawing from newly accessible archival materials, the book offers a detailed account of these Iranians’ experiences within the broader socio-political context of Stalinist repression. By focusing on the human dimension of political repression, the book illuminates the intersection of ideology, migration, and state violence.
The book is structured chronologically, tracing the migration of Iranian labourers to the Soviet Union, their involvement in political movements, and their eventual entrapment in the Stalinist purges. Themes such as Marxism-Leninism, the role of the Comintern, and the complex relationship between the Iranian communist movement and Soviet authorities are analysed in-depth, with a particular focus on how Stalin’s purges targeted marginalized foreign nationals.
Rather than offering a broad overview of Soviet history, the book zeroes in on the unique experiences of these Iranian individuals, using personal stories and newly discovered archival documents to bring the history of Soviet repression to life.
