Abstract

GLOBALISE is an innovative project that aims to open up the 'Transferred letters and papers' of the VOC to sophisticated new research methods. This archive set of more than 5 million handwritten pages covers almost the entire seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The documents contain a wealth of data crucial for understanding the maritime history of the Netherlands and for reconstructing the history of the vast area around the Indian Ocean and Indonesian archipelago where the VOC was active.

Our poster shows how we process the VOC sources and furthermore show that the GLOBALISE infrastructure is also open to other collections of primary and secondary sources, which offer additional perspectives on the past.
