Abstract
This introductory chapter draws attention to the rich but under-explored history of women and photography in Africa. The authors argue that a focus on women’s photographic practices across Africa deepens understandings of the medium by expanding notions of photographic production and curation and opening a dialogue with gendered photographic pasts. The authors show that attention to gender is critical for a revised understanding of photography as an aesthetic and social practice and shifts attention from the critique of dominant images of African women to the multifaceted nature of women’s photographic practices in Africa. The collection opens new lines of enquiry and new modes of revealing African photographic histories, locating the medium at the complex intersections of gender, class, race and sexuality across multiple times and spaces.
