New Perspectives on Neo-Latin Drama: From Philology to Ditial Humanities

Research output: Chapter in book/volumeContribution to conference proceedingsScientificpeer-review

Abstract

The question addressed in this chapter concerns the possibilities for the study and contextualization of such occasionally complex Neo-Latin dramas. How could we open up the content, meaning and significance of such plays and of early modern Latin drama in general? My aim is to give some answers to this question, which I hope will primarily serve to open discussion on the theme. I propose that Neo-Latin literature in general, and specifically drama, can profitably be studied following the approaches and theories of literary studies in general; apart from their language and specific objects of study – which in themselves are broad enough. Neo-Latin scholars need not have theirown research agenda.3 However, I will suggest that the vastness of the field and the specific character of Neo-Latin drama are researched best with the help of digital tools.
