N2 - This paper is one in a series dealing with comparative studies on the searching behaviour of eucoilid and alysiine parasitoid species. Some aspects of olfactory microhabitat selection were studied in several parasitoids of Drosophilidae and in some related species that attack larvae of larger Diptera. Odour preference experiments showed that the parasitoids of Drosophilidae studied were specific in their response to microhabitat odours. None of the eucoilid parasitoids of Drosophilidae used volatile compounds related to the presence of their host in microhabitat selection. This ability was, however, found in a more host specific eucoilid species and in some Alysiinae species. In a polyphagous species it was shown that the rearing process could influence the response to olfactory host cues, which once again demonstrated the importance of learning in parasitoid behaviour
