Abstract

Welcome to my personal research blog. I'm a PhD candidate from the Netherlands who has an interest in language and literature. In the project The Riddle of Literary Quality my colleagues and I explore the assumption that formal characteristics play a role in the aesthetic appreciation of novels. In my dissertation I focus on one genre in particular: the literary thriller. The questions I'd like to get answered are: (1) is the literary thriller a separate genre with distinctive formal features, (2) who is the reading audience, and (3) how does the reader perceive and evaluate the literary thriller? By studying certain stylistic, narrative and other textual features and the reception of the novels I aim to examine if there are correlations.
