Abstract
Unjustly, very little research has been done on Roman Catholic confraternities in the Netherlands in the 19th century. During this era confraternities grew into an instrument used to discipline the faithful and to develop Catholic identity. The article aims to encourage additional research and provides insight into the chronological, geographical and qualitative development of confraternity foundations, using an extensive collection of data.
