Abstract

Publishing house Querido published the book ‘Zussen. Een oorlogsverhaal’ [Sisters. A war story] in April 2017. In this family history Hinke Piersma describes the story of three Jewish sisters who, each in her own way, try to save themselves and their families during the Second World War. One goes into hiding, the second one uses forged papers to escape the occupier, and the third one flees to England. Although they went their separate ways, all three sisters are confronted with their inability to protect their loved ones.

Sisters is the true story of a family that is shattered and faced with heart-wrenching dilemmas during the war. It follows the fates of three strong women and their attempts to escape the Nazi policy of persecution. It is also the story of the battle over a child that, after the liberation, must heal the wounds the war inflicted on her family. Several family members claim her, this girl that must make everything right again.
