Abstract

The Twa Fjilden school is located in Friesland, a bilingual region in the Netherlands, where Dutch and the regional language Frisian are official languages, and where migration has increased the number of additional languages in schools.
These two pupils are in a mathematics class. At the Twa Fjilden school it has become normal to use pupils’ home language, in this case Kurdish, to solve mathematical problems. Working in home language pairs or small groups is a strategy used to make sure pupils maximize their engagement with the content. This promotes a deeper understanding of the content AND the development of pupils’ multilingual skills.
