Guest lecture 'Ageing, Migration and Social Exclusion: An International Overview' at the 2nd COST Training School, Reducing Old-Age Social Exclusion (ROSEnet), 18th-21st September 2017, Camerino, Italy.

In the early post-war years, young labour migrants moved within or into Europe and have ‘aged in place’. In addition, nowadays older adults are more ‘on the move’ than ever before. This mobility takes different forms, such as later-life migration to join adult migrant children abroad, travelling back and forth between the country of destination and origin, old-age return migration, and international retirement migration in search for attractive climate and leisure
amenities. Lately, increasing attention has been paid to the impact of these movements on migrants’ social wellbeing and how they cope with social deficits, if any. In her lecture, Tineke Fokkema will address and illustrate both topics, using examples from her own research. It draws on survey data as well as in-depth interviews among older migrants with different nationalities and migration histories, who live in different countries and are at various stages in their life course.
