Beschrijving

An Eye for Freedom is an online exhibition that focuses on images made by anti-apartheid activist Gille de Vlieg in the last two decades of apartheid. Her work illuminates the critical part women played in the struggle for freedom in South Africa, both as political activists and through the essential forms of labour and love that hold life together even under dire circumstances.

The exhibition includes eight ‘photo-films’ – photographs made by Gille de Vlieg in Tembisa and accompanied by audio recordings of anti-apartheid activist Debora Marakalala speaking about her activism and about being detained and tortured by the Security Police.
