Beschrijving

Being on the margins of empires, liminal locations are often also on the margins of our historic sources. Consequently, we often attribute them marginal importance. Yet exactly because of their liminal position, borderline places like coastal areas form highly-important frontiers and zones of contact. Moreover, these liminal landscapes often are closely connected to other liminal areas across cultural and political boundaries, even to the extent that they form new cultural zones in which these landscapes become central and are imbued with meaning.
In this paper, I will first approach boundaries and the idea of liminal areas as places of contact more generally, before focusing on two examples of cross-boundary cultural zones in early-medieval and Viking times.
