“Recent advancements in Open Science necessitate researchers to archive and grant public access to their research data. Consequently, most Dutch universities have established institutional data repository infrastructure to assist researchers in their data archiving and publishing endeavours. However, funding agencies and scientific journals are increasingly requiring researchers to utilize data repositories that are both FAIR-enabling and trustworthy. The European Commission is advocating for the deposition of research data in repositories certified for their trustworthiness, such as those accredited by CoreTrustSeal.Meeting these (certification) standards poses challenges for small institutional repositories, which often lack expertise in long-term preservation, trustworthiness and standards for FAIR-enabling capabilities. Therefore, there is a pressing need for national collaboration among representatives of Dutch institutional data repositories, and expert organisations as SURF and DANS.
A roundtable discussion is proposed for individuals interested in data repositories to explore the formation of such collaboration and how to connect to other initiatives such as the establishment of a European network of Trustworthy Digital Repositories. Furthermore, we will exchange insights on crucial topics, including the establishment of preservation plans, implementation of FAIR standards, connecting to European and national developments and guidelines to improve the transparency of, and trust in, repositories.
