Beschrijving

The doctoral thesis attempted to answer the following research question: How has the Icelanders' proximity to volcanoes shaped their identity and ideas about ethnicity and history over the last 250 years? Atli Antonsson's goal was to find an answer to the research question by analyzing accounts of volcanic eruptions from the 18th century to the present day. Answers were sought in descriptions and accounts of volcanic eruptions and volcanoes that can be found in novels, poems, autobiographies and so-called ´fire writings´ from this period. The result of the research was four articles that have been published in peer-reviewed academic journals and one chapter in addition. In them, the research question is answered from different sources and, among other things, the theology and aesthetics of volcanic eruptions, volcanoes in the patriotic poems of national poets, the reception history of the ´fire priest´ Jón Steingrímsson, volcanic eruptions in novels and fire writings on the anthropocene.
