Beschrijving

Historical demographers have been working with historical person data for decades. The increase in computing power has made it possible to reconstruct populations of an ever-increasing size. To move beyond local and regional reconstructions of historical populations, data standardisation and specialised software is required. With Persons in Context (PiCo), the Dutch Center for Family History (CBG) has released a model to standardise historical person data. PiCo has the necessary quality and nation-wide support from archivists and scholars to develop into a national, and perhaps even international, standard. Ideally, implementing PiCo will not only make transcribed historical data more FAIR, but will also improve the quality of software that processes historical person data. This paper explores the implications of applying PiCo to the LINKS pipeline, part of the Dutch CLARIAH WP4 project, for reconstructing life courses and family relations in the Netherlands. In our presentation we will document the practical implications of introducing the model into an existing pipeline and explore the possibilities for extending our pipeline to other historical data sources and countries.
