Fungi are hyper diverse organisms that are distributed globally in numerous substrates and relatively poor studied considering that we only know about 5 % of the fungal diversity. Presently, many of these organisms are in risk of extinction even before they are discovered, mainly due to the accelerated habitat lost as consequence of the climate change, overexploitation, pollution, among others. That is why remains urgently needed to preserve as much fungal species as possible before they disappear. The soil as substrate has been demonstrated as a reservoir of several groups of fungi. Since some years ago, the Westerdijk Institute has been engaged in projects that focus on the diversity of cultivable micro fungi from soil. Preliminary results have shown that even countries as the Netherlands that has been relatively well study still remain as a source of many species to be discovered. In addition to cataloging numerous fungal species previously unreported from the Netherlands, more than 50 new species have been discovered and barcodes have been generated for all strains in order to identify each strain at species level. All of this data is being centralized in order to generate a reference database to speed up species identification and facilitate further monitoring studies. Furthermore, most strains are being preserved in the CBS collection to ensure that they will be available to other researchers. Culture collections play an essential role in the preservation of fungi, especially those grown artificially in culture media, as they act as repositories of live strains that ensure their availability for future studies, whether for scientific or commercial purposes.| Periode | 31 okt. 2024 |
