Beschrijving

Mussolini, Hitler and Stalin are beyond doubt the best-known dictators of the twentieth century. These three men succeeded in grabbing power and keeping a tight hold on it for years. Using modern propaganda techniques to gain mass support, they directed the violent repression of opponents in their own country and were also responsible for mass atrocities beyond the national borders - in militarily conquered territory and/or the shatterzones of their empires.
This course focuses on comparison. In the lectures and seminars our aims is to explore both literature and primary sources to find similarities and differences with regard to four important areas of the three dictatorships: 1. the rise to power of the leaders; 2. the consolidation of their reign; 3. the relationship of the leaders with ‘ordinary’ citizens; 4. the radicalization and brutalization of their regimes. In the seminars, students will be introduced into the methodology of comparative-historical research. The acquired historical knowledge and skills in conducting comparative-historical research are used in crafting the individual research paper that concludes the course.
