Researchers compared leaf damage caused by insects and pathogens in areas with and without the presence of mammals such as tapirs, deer and peccaries. The absence of animals has led to the loss of microorganisms that cause leaf diseases, which can affect long-term eco-evolutionary processes and reduce the biodiversity of tropical forests.
