Vincent Robert graduated from the Catholic University of Louvain (UCL), Belgium in 1989 as an agricultural engineer.

He then worked for five years as a researcher at the University of Burundi until the end of 1994 when he started a PhD in bioinformatics on algorithms for diagnostic and clustering at the UCL (graduation in 1997).

He then became the curator of the MUCL collection until he joined the CBS-KNAW, an institute of the Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1999 to become the curator of the largest yeasts collection in the world while continuing software developments.

In 2000, he created BioAware, a software and bioinformatics company as a spinoff of the CBS-KNAW. He is the Chief Executive Officer of BioAware. The main product of the company is called BioloMICS, a software for the management, analysis and publication of biological data that is used worldwide by many research institutions and companies.

In 2008, he initiated a research group on bioinformatics that he is still leading.

As former curator of two large fungal collection (MUCL and CBS-KNAW), Vincent has a solid experience in fungal systematics and collaborated with many mycologists on different aspects such as identification or diagnostics, classification, genome analysis, thermos regulation and of course on databasing, algorithms and software developments. He was the first to create polyphasic online identification websites.

Since 2018, Vincent Robert is extraordinary professor at the University of Perugia (Italy) and is teaching bioinformatics and software developments (third, doctoral cycle). For many years, he is also a visiting professor at the Annual Mycology Course of the Institut Pasteur (Paris, France)

His skill set includes: (i) a broad range of diagnostic methods including, morphological, phenotypic, sequencing and other genotypic, methods; (ii) development of algorithms (iii) development of biological databases and websites, (iv) design and writing of software for the management, analysis and publication of data; (v) supervision and undertaking complex data analysis studies including genomics and multi-criteria research.
