Between freedom and formalisation: A hypergraph model for representing the nature of text

Samenvatting

In this longpaper, we present the theoretical and practical implications of using the TAG data model and the associated syntax TAGML to express textual features (such as overlapping text structures, nonlinear text, or discontinuous text) in a way that corresponds more closely with the scholar’s understanding of it. We will give examples from the field of textual genesis studies, which presents some particularly intriguing requirements for text modeling. As TAG considers text as a network of often implicit information, TAGML documents are inherently multi-layered and non-linear, and combine ordered and unordered information. Accordingly, scholars can digitally represent their understanding of a text in a more explicit and formalised manner. This paves the way to an innovative approach to creating, modeling, and processing textual objects.
