Samenvatting

The Baseline Use Case, developed in BY-COVID WP5, has prototyped a workflow standard for population health research. This federated workflow provides a structured process for causal inference and is designed to leverage real-world heterogeneous oberservational data sources from different domains in multiple countries in a privacy-preserving and interoperable way. This report describes the enrichment of the Baseline Use Case through the integration of socioeconomic data.

An initial workshop was held in April 2023 on the "Integration of socioeconomic data in observational studies on vaccine effectiveness", to promote these developments and stimulate community discussion around it. The workshop report presents the findings from this exploratory workshop and forms the basis of the current report. A second workshop took place in June 2024, after the local execution of the federated workflow, to evaluate the data integration process and to identify barriers and facilitators related to the identification, linkage, and analysis of individual-level socioeconomic data. The insights from this second workshop have been used to further enrich the current report.

This report discusses the value of individual- and area-level socioeconomic data for population health research and provides an overview of individual- and area-level socioeconomic indicators and data sources. Following this, the report applies these insights to the vaccine effectiveness research question addressed in the Baseline Use Case. Lastly, it concludes with a broader discussion on the generalizability and policy relevance of incorporating socioeconomic data in population health research.
