Samenvatting
This PhD thesis focuses on the socialist, sociologist and feminist Dr Hilda Verwey-Jonker (1908-2004). In the introduction, I discuss Verwey-Jonker’s autobiography. The questions her memories provoke were the starting point for my research. I present the results of my investigations in 14 chapters, in which I give my view on her life. In the epilogue, I present answers to the questions Verwey-Jonker’s autobiography raises and connect them with the notion that women are not supposed to fight in public. I thus present a new explanation for the very slow entry of women into Dutch parliamentary politics.
