Samenvatting
The article explores the role played by the provinces of the so-called interior of
the country in the first stage of Argentina’s socialism. The first part traces the
place Socialist Party leaders assigned to the interior in their theoretical and
political considerations. This is achieved by assessing the interpretations and
characterizations published in La Vanguardia from its creation in 1894 until
Juan B. Justo’s development of the “socialist program for the countryside” in
the early twentieth century. In the second part, the article examines the first
organizational steps taken by the Socialist Party outside Buenos Aires in the
same period so as to explore the concrete forms the development of the first
centers and groups took in the various provinces.
