How are personal letters and diaries used when studying people’s experiences in times of war? How does the digitisation of historical ‘egodocuments’ contribute to this, and what issues does this raise? How do archivists and historians collaborate in this field? On 23 and 24 May 2024, an international group of archivists and historians addressed these and other questions during the workshop on Exploring Historical War Experiences through Digital Sources and Methodologies at Tampere University in Finland. NIOD employees Arvid de Raaij and Milan van Lange travelled to the far north to discuss how NIOD’s collection of war letters has developed and changed over the years.
