Samenvatting

This is the first Italian study focusing on the well-being of older migrants. Information on the experience of loneliness, its causes and coping strategies was gathered through 30 in-depth interviews with Albanian and Moroccan older migrants aged 50 and over. Findings show that the great majority of the participants are lonely. Taking care of their grandchildren and comparing their situation with their native peers, seem to serve as a buffer against extreme loneliness. Having more contacts with ethnic peers and better contact with their native-born children-in-law could reduce their feelings of loneliness even more, but factors like lack of financial resources, contact facilities close by and language barriers are hindering them to do so. These factors offer clues for public loneliness interventions.
