Samenvatting

When Europeans think of transatlantic aviation, the image that springs to mind is that of aircraft in flight over the city of New York. But the focus on North America has shielded the intriguing and often complex stories of air transport to other parts of the Western Hemisphere. This is a first attempt to unravel the story of airline diplomacy on routes over the South Atlantic – a largely uncharted terrain in international relations. Such relations could be highly complex. Aviation connected politics, trade, and finances. As we shall see, the commercial nature of Dutch air transportation was a complicating factor in its own right in a period in which aviation was dominated by politics.
