N2 - In 1595 four ships departed Amsterdam for a voyage to the Indian Ocean. This so-called 'first voyage' heralded the beginning of a Dutch presence in Asian waters. Within a decade, Dutch ships outnumbered Portuguese vessels on the outward voyage to Asia. This chapter studies the preparation of this first voyage by the 'Company of Far Lands', and looks at the investment gather and the organizational model for the company, the information gathered in preparation of the dispatch of the ships and the practical process of building, crewing and provisioning the ships. In so doing it sheds new light on this momentous voyage.
