Samenvatting

Time for social contacts. Time allocation after the age of 45 in Canada and the Netherlands. The interrelationship between roles of adults aged 45 and over and time allocated to social integration through social leisure activities and volunteer work is investigated in this study. Data were drawn from Canada and Dutch time use surveys conducted in 1998 and 2000 respectively. Multivariate analyses indicated that in addition to work status, it is age, educational level and especially partner status that are important determinants of how older adults in the two countries have allocated their time among competing activities. In using a typology of living arrangements the social integrative function of mid-life and older women for the couple’s social activities is illustrated in time allocated to social leisure activities and volunteer work.
